homm2-to-fheroes2

Upload and Convert
original Heroes of Might and Magic II saves to the fheroes2 engine.
Select one or several .GM1 / .GMC / .GXC files, or drop them here — they are converted right away. The files never leave your computer.
Where are the saves? In the game's GAMES folder:
  • Windows (GOG): C:\GOG Games\Heroes of Might and Magic II\GAMES\
  • Windows 98 / XP (CD install): C:\Program Files\Heroes of Might and Magic II\GAMES\ — or a manual install: C:\HEROES2\GAMES\
  • macOS / Linux: inside the game (or DOSBox/Staging) directory — e.g. ~/games/homm2/GAMES/
Look for files ending in .GM1.

What may differ or be lost

  • Rumors, adventure map events, sign and sphinx texts are not carried over.
  • Barrier passwords are not carried over (fheroes2 generates its own; barrier colors are kept).
  • The original cheat flag, high scores and multiplayer saves are not supported.
  • Hero movement paths and the note of what each hero has already visited are not carried over — a hero on a planned route stands still (movement is recalculated the next day), and some once-per-hero bonuses (e.g. Faerie Ring) may trigger again.
  • Campaign saves convert to .savc — load them in fheroes2 from the Campaign menu.

FAQ

Will fheroes2 accept the converted save?

The output targets the fheroes2 save format versions 10032–10034 (10033 by default, read by fheroes2 1.1.15 and later). To pick another version, select it here — already loaded saves are re-converted:

Can I convert back?

No. Conversion is one-way: original → fheroes2.

Can I convert an edited fheroes2 save?

No. The input must be a save written by the original Heroes of Might and Magic II. If you want to edit an fheroes2 save file instead, use fheroes2-save-editor.

Why does my hero have no movement path after conversion?

Paths are cleared by design; fheroes2 recalculates movement on the next day.
